Changes In Life

The piece

A pot of four flowers on a windowsill, each in a different stage of wilting.

Why?

This is my final piece in my series of changes over time. I wanted to draw something representative of life without actually drawing a person throughout their life. So, I chose the next best thing: flowers. I intended for all flowers to be “one,” as in they are all stages of the same flower. The cycle starts from the left one in the middle, top, right middle, bottom. If you look at the flowers in that order, you will see the wilting stages. The petals start to wilt and become discolored as well as the veins in the petals become more prominent. I chose flowers because they are known for not having a very long shelf life, as in they wilt quickly. Most people die before they turn 100, which is very short in the grand scheme of time.

Skills learned/used

How?

A skill I learned while creating this piece was how to draw flowers and stems. Since this was my first time, I feel the stems look a little wonky. I have drawn some flowers since then, I think they look a lot better. I used my skills in outlining everything. I wanted there to be more contrast between each part of the drawing instead of all pencil and shading. I decided to outline everything with a thin Sharpie. Last minute, I decided to add tiny circles in the center of the flower, which took a while, but was totally worth it.
