The Piece
Why?
This piece is the second in my series of changes over time. For this piece, I wanted to focus on a nature aspect of change. For me, a caterpillar turning into a butterfly was the easiest choice for me to illustrate. I chose to place them on the same set of leaves because I wanted the caterpillar to seem like it’s looking into its future. I chose a black background because I wanted high contrast between the background and the brightly colored leaves, caterpillar, and butterfly.
Skills learned/used
How?
At this point in my artist career, I had never drawn animals up close. I learned how to use a reference point for how I wanted the animals to look. In my previous skillset, I was able to precisely color between lines well as there are many small lines in this piece.
